NYSC FAULTS POLICE OVER ARREST OF 3 CORPS MEMBERS FOR ROBBERY

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has described the arrest of three corps members by men of the Nigeria Police, on allegation of robbing a shop owner in Suleja, Niger State, as case of mistaken identity.

In respect of this, it said two of the accused corps members have been released while it is working on securing the release of the third corps member.

The NYSC Director of Public Relations, Mrs Bose Aderibigbe, while making clarifications on the case, stated that their release was secured as a result of interventions from the Niger State government through the office of the Secretary to the Government and the Ministry of Youth Development.

In a statement by the NYSC, Aderibigbe stated that “Without prejudice to the investigative duties of the appropriate law enforcement agency, we have it on good authority that preliminary findings had shown that the accusation against the trio was based only on circumstantial evidence.”

The NYSC, however, assured the public, particularly parents and guardians of corps members that no single corps member will be allowed to suffer unduly, especially over cases of mistaken identity during the service year.

She stated that the provisions of the NYSC Bye-Laws are very clear on the involvement of corps members in criminal acts, though very unlikely, as their participation in the scheme does not confer immunity from prosecution.

cecil killer to resume work

The Minnesota dentist whose killing of Cecil the lion sparked global outraged said Sunday he would return to work this week, and expressed frustration at the animosity directed at those close to him.

Walter Palmer, who has spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, intends to return to his suburban Minneapolis dental practice Tuesday.

In an interview Sunday evening conducted jointly by The Associated Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune that advisers said would be the only one granted, Palmer reiterated that he believes he acted legally and that he was stunned to find out his hunting party had killed one of Zimbabwe's treasured animals.


"If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously I wouldn't have taken it," Palmer said. "Nobody in our hunting party knew before or after the name of this lion."

Cecil was a fixture in the vast Hwange National Park and had been fitted with a GPS collar as part of Oxford University lion research. Palmer said he shot the big cat with the black mane using an arrow from his compound bow outside the park's borders but it didn't die immediately. He disputed conservationist accounts that the wounded lion wandered for 40 hours and was finished off with a gun, saying it was tracked down the next day and killed with an arrow.

An avid sportsman, Palmer shut off several lines of inquiry about the hunt, including how much he paid for it or others he has undertaken. No videotaping or photographing of the interview was allowed. During the 25-minute interview, Palmer gazed intensely at his questioners, often fiddling with his hands and turning occasionally to an adviser, Joe Friedberg, to field questions about the fallout and his legal situation.

US Open: Rafael Nadal loses to Fabio Fognini in third-round thriller

World number eight Rafael Nadal is out of the US Open after losing a five-set, third-round thriller to Italian Fabio Fognini at Flushing Meadows.

Spaniard Nadal's 10-year streak of winning a Grand Slam singles title was ended by the world number 32, who won 3-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.

It is the first time that double US Open winner Nadal, 29, has lost in a Grand Slam having been two sets up.

Fognini, 28, faces Spain's Feliciano Lopez in round four.
