DANSUKI to appear in court today

Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dansuki who is to appear in court today

Nigeria’s National security adviser (NSA) under the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan will appear in court today after prosecutors filled charges of illegal possession of weapons against him

If found guilty, he will become the first real casualty of president Buhari’s fight against corruption and embezzlement in Nigeria since he became president

Mr Dansuki, who is being accused of so many shady deals including the $15Mn botched arms deal in South Africa during his time as the NSA was relieved of his duties by President Buhari in June

The Department of Security Services (DSS) laid siege to three properties belonging to him in Asokoro, Abuja and Sokoto which lasted for 24 hours with extensive search operations carried out by the security operatives

In a statement signed by one of its officials, Tony Opuiyo, the DSS later said it recovered “several items, some of which were incriminating items, including seven (7) high caliber rifles, (high assault weapons), several magazines and military related gears.” Also twelve new vehicles, out of which five were bullet proofs were also seized during the raid

The State Security Service on about one week ago announced that it has charged Sambo Dasuki, over alleged “acts capable of undermining national security.”

Despite other evidences against him, he is only being charge on the count of possession of illegal firearms. A count If convicted could fetch him 10 years in prison, according the Nigeria’s firearms law

The former NSA had last week filed his bail application in anticipation that the court will hear it immediately after taking his plea on today

In January, Mr. Dasuki nearly plunged Nigeria into a serious political crisis when he announced during a lecture at Chattam House in London that elections would not hold due to Boko Haram insurgency. The elections were subsequently postponed under circumstances that tend to favor then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan
